Social Justice Film Awards, initiated by National Federation of Independent Trade Unions and other civil groups, is a separate competition from Taipei Film Festival, aiming to select 18 movies which fit the topic of social justice from the nomination list of Taipei Film Awards, from with the judges would choose the movie most perfectly embodied the idea of social justice. Hopefully the Social Justice Film Awards would encourage Taiwan’s movie workers to make a reference to the real society in their works and fulfill the possibility of social participation of image intervention.

NCCU Art & Culture Centre and Social Justice Film Awards join hands and select some of the nominated movies suitable for this year topic, “Asia, Migration, Transformation.” Nia’s Door is focusing on the distress of the migrant workers in a foreign land. Asian societies are full of variables and uncertainties, and The Taste of Apple, Hebei Taipei and After Spring, the Tamaki Family… are films discussing the survival issues leading from migrations and alterations, and how to uphold social justice in an unfavorable circumstance.

The Chairman of the judging panel of the Social Justice Film Awards and the Vice Dean of College of Communication, NCCU, Professor Chen Ru-shou, pointed out that comparing to mainstream film festivals which take great emphasis on the image aesthetics, Social Justice Film Awards concentrates on the issues the movie reveals. The Awards may raise public awareness to the current trend of issues from the nomination list or a long-neglected issue from a single film.

NCCU Art & Culture Centre is honored to have the opportunity to play two of the nominated films (Nia’s Door and After Spring, the Tamaki Family) and two of the award-wining films (The Taste of Apple and Hebei Taipei ) in the campus of NCCU, and to set up after-screening talk with the director of each film. Besides, NCCU Art & Culture Centre will play the 35th Hong Kong Film Awards Best Film Award winner Ten Years. All students and staff are welcomed to participate in this event, to care for the migration issues in Asia.
