In order to promote an artistic and cultural environment, provide a means for professors and students to come into contact with the arts, and to support development of the arts in our community, NCCU has sponsored the "Artist-in-Residence" program since 2001. We are proud to call ourselves pioneers among domestic universities—through the "Artist-in-Residence" program, we have promoted creative spirit and artistic vision on the NCCU campus.

In the same year, we established the "Artist-in-residence placement plan," creating a selection committee comprised of three to seven faculty members with expertise and experience in the arts. In 2010, we created the "Art and Cultural Consulting and Planning Committee" which to this day leads our "Artist-in-Residence" program.

In the first season, we invited NCCU alumnus Lin Hwai-min, founder of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, and since then we have continued to invite such individuals as Huang Chunming (writer), Jimmy Liao (illustrator), Liu Fengxue (choreographer), Guoguang Opera Company, The National Symphony Orchestra, Hugh K. S. Lee and Ping-Fong Acting Troupe, Pai Hsien-yung (author) and Liao Chiung-chih (Chinese opera
singer), Lee Tai-hsiang (musician), Wu Nien-jen (author, director), as well as others. We have hosted such art events for fourteen years and our legacy has become one of the most important cultural traditions of NCCU.

The artists or groups invited each year to NCCU come from the fields of literature, visual arts, music, dance, or theater. These artists invite viewers and participants to enter their creative world and to share the difficulty as well as successes that they have experienced in their artistic process. The types of programming include: exhibitions, artistic performances, lectures, workshops, and more. In the process of participation, creative seeds are planted and the possibilities of this artistic community are expanded. The benefit that these artists bring is not limited to our campus alone, but extends to individuals from around the community who can all enjoy these artistic opportunities together. NCCU, an institution reputed for treasuring and promoting the arts, plays its role as an important leader in the educational and artistic community through the numerous events it holds on its campus.

This season, NCCU has invited alumnus Lin Hwai-min and Cloud Gate Dance Theatre as the artists-in-residence for its 14th season. This is the first time that NCCU has invited the same artist-in-residence twice.

In 1973, Lin Hwai-min established the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and the group became East Asia's first modern dance company. The company's works bridge Eastern and Western traditions as well as ancient and contemporary styles. Cloud Gate not only caused a revolution in the way that Taiwanese audiences think about and view dance, but also has received notable attention from the international art world.

Lin Hwai-min, who has already left a prodigious mark on the modern dance world, his extremely accomplished and continually growing Cloud Gate Dance Theatre 2 embers, as well as worldclass teachers such Chang Chao-tang, Ping Heng, and Wu Nien-jen, will lead this year’s programming series in lectures, discussions, performances, workshops, and film screenings. This season of activities and performance will
allow participants to deeply understand the modern dance as we know it today.

Lin Hwai-min

Lin Hwai-min was born in Chiayi and graduated from NCCU in the department of journalism. During his time at NCCU, he demonstrated a passionate interest in dance and often speaks of practicing dance in the Foursquare building as a student. At the age of twenty-two he had already published two novels, which received much regard in Taiwanese literary circles of the 60s and 70s. In 1972, Lin Hwai-min graduated with a Master's degree from the University of Iowa Creative Writing program. While living abroad, he studied modern dance in Iowa and New York.

In 1973, Lin Hwai-min established Cloud Gate Dance Theatre. In 1983, he established the National Art Institute's Dance department (currently known as Taipei National University of the Arts). In 1999, he established Cloud Gate 2. The two companies have toured around the world and have received much acclaim.Lin often draws his inspiration from traditional Asian culture and aesthetics to create original works with contemporary resonance, which have made Dance Europe acclaim: “No company in the world dances like Cloud Gate. It presents a distinct and mature Chinese choreographic language. The importance of this evolution in Asian dance is no less profound than the impact of Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt on European classical ballet.”

Honouring Lin Hwai-min with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, the jury of the International Movimentos Dance Prize, Germany, hails him as "a foremost innovator of dance" and that "Lin Hwai-min ranks amongst artist of the century such as William Forsythe, George Balanchine, Birgit Cullberg…"

In July of 2013, Lin Hwai-min followed in the footsteps of Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and Pina Bausch to receive the prestigious Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement. The Festival announcement stated that: “Mr. Lin's fearless zeal for the art form has established him as one of the most dynamic and innovative choreographers today... his choreographic brilliance continues to push boundaries and redefine the art form.” He is the first recipient of this award who is based in Asia. Invited by the International Theatre Institute, Lin served as the author for the 2013 International Dance Day Message.

Among the honours Lin Hwai-min has received are honorary doctorates from six universities in Taiwan and Hong Kong, the Taiwan National Award for the Arts, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award, the award for 'Best Choreographer' at the Lyon Biennial Festival, “Distinguished Artist Award” presented by International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA), and the "Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters" from the French Ministry of Culture. In 2005, he was celebrated by Time Magazine as one of "Asia's Heroes."

Lin Hwai-min has been the subject of full-length television documentaries: Portraits of Taiwan: Lin Hwai-min (Discovery Channel), Floating on the Ground (Opus Arte), and "Lin Hwai-min- Interface Between Worlds" (ARTE/ZDF). Since 2000, he has served as the Artistic Director of "Novel Dance Series" for the Novel Hall for Performing Arts in Taipei.
