Shuoyin Chang

Shuoyin Chang (b. 1982, Taiwan) known as a street artist (Bbrother) in Taipei, where he organized numerous street interventions. After receiving his MFA in Goldsmiths, University of London. His practice swift to installations which are marked with brevity and absurd objects, getting to the core of contemporary problems: globalization stimulated by the developments in technology, blurred boundaries between nations, or the omniscient fear of terrorism that we are already accustomed to. Freely and with a wicked dose a black humor (European Performance Festival, 2011), Chang toys with such concepts as death, war, and mass destruction, which have become ingrained in today's world. Chang lives and works in London and has exhibited and received a number of awards internationally including the Taipei Biennial (2008), Forum Biennial 2010 (Taipei), Moscow Biennial (2012), Salon Art Prize (London, 2011), European Performance Festival (Warsaw, 2011), Malta Festival (Poznan, 2012).

Shuoyin is currently living and working in London.

Manila Galleons

  • 12/10 Tue. 19:00-20:30
  • Venue: Digital Arts Center of the Art & Culture Center
  • Speaker: Shuoyin Chang (Artist)

The Manila Galleons were the Spanish trading ships that sail once or twice per year between Seville in Europe, Acapulco in New Spain (Mexico), the Spanish East Indies (Philippines), Taiwan and Canton in China. The trading route was inaugurated in 1565 with the establishment of the ocean passage with China, and continued until Mexico War of independence in 1815. The 250 years of galleon trade constructed a world map of early globalization, where Europe, America and Asia were linked with American Silver, slavery, Chinese silk, tea and luxury goods.

Taking the Manila Galleons as a point of departure, Chang will elaborate how (graffiti) artists respond to issues such as (inter-)national politics, immigration, colonization and economical depression in contemporary Europe.
