Brief on Suming

Suming is a multi-talented indigenous musician from Taiwan’s Amis Tribe. Not only has he received numerous musical accolades and written songs and lyrics for pop stars like Landy Wen and Chyi Chin, he has also played roles as varied as a traditional rattan weaver, dance theater performer and visual artist whose works have been publicly exhibited. Much to his own surprise, his rise to notoriety came when he was awarded “Best New Actor” at the Golden Horse Film Awards in 2008. He has even won the most popular music awards in Taiwan the " Golden Melody Awards " for Best Aboriginal Album.

Despite all of these achievements, Suming has never forgotten his roots. He returns often to Dulan, the village of his birth, to help pass on Amis culture to the next generation. It is perhaps because Suming continually revisits his origins that his creations – regardless of genre – embody a unique indigenous spirit that is equally at home in the indigenous villages and urban areas of Taiwan. His varied life experiences have proven an invaluable inspiration for his creations, enabling him to transcend the boundaries of language and space, and to resonate with an enthusiastic audience that is fortunate to participate in the musical conversation.

Suming is a musician who insists on creating through his mother tongue; during the process of music composition, he mainly draws inspiration from life experiences or friends’ tales, while his tribal experience comes from his childhood memories. On the road to pursuing his dreams, Suming was once also puzzled about his life; he especially cared about the teenagers in the indigenous tribes and hoped to lead them to find their paths through his own experience. Bearing his gratitude towards his tribe and a passion for his home town, Suming returned to his tribe to organize youth cultural experience camps, because “some things cannot be learned in school”. He does not necessarily want the tribal youths to learn tradition, but rather wishes to provide them with an opportunity to experience youth and get in touch with the indigenous culture in life.

Suming’s dream is to popularize the indigenous culture. He “pioneered the ‘love indigenous style’ concept and the mainstream trend of singing in one’s mother tongue”. In 2010 he released his first personal mother tongue creative album and received immense popularity at the 22nd Golden Melody Awards. During the concert, we will be able to listen to Suming’s interpretation of indigenous songs through his new generation pop music approach and share his musical progress.
