This year’s winter rain is intensive and lengthy, which makes one especially look forward to the arrival of spring, because spring always implies wonderful acquaintances.

For the first exhibition in spring, the NCCU Art & Culture Center has invited contemporary artist Akibo, prominent in the Taiwanese design industry and high-tech art industry. In the Akibo Plus-Design + Fine Arts Solo Exhibition, the artist will share with the audience his record designs that fuses Taiwan’s characteristics with pop culture, as well as a collection of robot creations which emanates childlike imaginations and sci-fi fantasies. Having received comprehensive academic training and accumulated a wealth of commercial design practical experience, this is a unique visual vocabulary unique formed by Akibo. He is skillful, sophisticated, yet he has also retained the passionate, acute creativity of an artist, in turn mixing and matching them to forge the extravagant yet down-to-earth personal creative style. While roaming between the exquisite and public, or art and commercialization, Akibo challenges the audience’s agile thinking and energy of creative transfer when faced with the creative field of different materials.

For the highly popular performance series, the NCCU Art & Culture Center has collaborated with the College of Communication’s “Pop Culture and Pop Music Course” to hold three dazzling independent music concerts, where renowned independent Filipino folksong music producer Nityalila Saulo, Polish avant-garde pop female vocalist Gaba Kulka and Amis tribe music creator from Taiwan Suming will be invited. Their music creations all begin from their native soil and voice to the world with high spirits and independence. Exhibition coordinator Zhong Shi-fang specializes in finding different sounds to present the unique landscape. Bleuel’s saxophone and piano duet comes from an American musician couple who has previously performed on internationally acclaimed stages. This time, they will be brining lively and brisk jazz music performance to the campuses of the NCCU.

Lan Mei-hua, director-general of the Taiwan Association of Visual Ethnography, is also a professor at the university’s Department of Ethnology; she has long been involved in the education and promotion of ethnology and visual ethnography, and we are fortunate that she has helped to materialize the “International Ethnographic Film Festival” at the NCCU, which is inspired by the theme of “Suffering and Rebirth”. In total, eight documentaries from different countries, ethnicities and cultures will be shown in seven screenings to help us examine ourselves and seek predicaments and opportunities in life from the perspective of other cultures.

The “Life Aesthetics Lecture” series will invite exhibition artist Akibo to share with the audience about the stories behind his creations. In addition, in collaboration with the National Theater & Concert Hall Taiwan Art Lecture Express, invitations were extended to the founder of Han Tang Yuefu Chen Mei-o, and the 2011 National Award for Arts recipient, director of GuoGuang Opera Company Lee Hsiao-Pin. Through lectures, everyone will be able to gain deeper understanding of the two outstanding artists and their teams; furthermore, the audience will also be able to appreciate the creative essence of their latest creations at the Taiwan International Festival of Arts, namely The King and Queen of the Shang Dynasty - Wu Ding & Fu Hao and Cleopatra and Her Fools.

There is also something special which one can look forward to in spring at the NCCU.

Don’t ask who the resident artist for this year is yet! Have you heard of the song “Olive Tree” before? Perhaps you or your parents have spent a wonderful time with the song previously? The musician who transcends classical and pop and continues to compose music passionately with his life, whether you are familiar with him or not, let us salute him with our recollection and passion of youth! Let us look forward to another beautiful encounter in the spring of 2012!
